A Japanese court sentenced Tetsuya Yamagami to life in prison for assassinating former prime minister Shinzo Abe in 2022. Yamagami admitted shooting Abe with a homemade gun at an election rally in Nara. He said he acted out of resentment toward the Unification Church, which he blamed for bankrupting his family.
