To Lam, head of the Communist Party of Vietnam, has been reappointed by its central committee. Unlike in the past two decades, To Lam has concentrated power in his own hands as he has instituted crackdowns on dissent and internet controls to stop any opposition and this continues that track. On the flipside, he has also seen through genuine economic development and sweeping anti-corruption campaigns that in 2023-4 saw the resignation of two state presidents. It’s to be seen how the future shall go between the backsliding and the focus on development, hopefully the people of Vietnam are not left on the back foot.
