It was, rather, an important issue for most voters that helped sway the election, second maybe to inflation and CPI. Now that sentiment is changing again. Partly it’s the tyranny and overreach on the part of the govt, but it may also be that voters aren’t seeing positive tangible results out of it. I actually think the Abundance messaging and new policies being embraced is an important part of fighting and shaking off the zero-sum populism, and that anti-immigration is mostly down-stream from said zero-sum thinking. They shifted to that mindset in part from seeing their lot get worse and feeling gaslit, then self-righteous. Vibes gonna vibe. The moment the Dems can boast about fixing housing, it’s over.

The normie zeigtgeist was so simple that anyone with 2 braincells could figure out what they wanted:
1. Deport illegal or temporary migrants who committed violent crime
2. Shutdown the asylum spam at the borders which made it feel like ‘open-borders’
That was literally it. Lucky for us, Trump is a buffoon with no ideology of his own; and he outsourced the immigration portfolio to an actual neo-nazi in Stephen Miller (which is ironic to say, since hes Jewish whose own grandparents had to escape Russian pogroms and the holocaust). The guy’s position on immigration is atleast 2 standard deviations to the right of the normie window.

Problem that MAGA has when being the incumbent is they dont understand their own appeal. The appeal of Trump in 2016 and 2024 to normies is that they perceive Republicans to be strong or at least stronger than the Dems. They get sold into the ideas that the Dems simply dont
have the courage to do the right thing to protect this country and the Republicans have the spine to be effective.
The problem for MAGA is that they misinterpret this desire for strength for a desire for cruelty. MAGA believes that being cruel and sadistic is the same as being strong and effective. So they do performatively cruel things like caging up children and shooting innocent citizens in cold blood and say “Look! We’re being effective!” and are actually just scaring the middle third of this country away from them
