A war of words erupted between Machado and Rodriguez. After a meeting in Washington with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, quoted by El Nacional, asserted that she was working “on a genuine transition […] not a Russian-style transition where the mafias remain in power.” She reffered to Delcy Rodriguez, the interim president, a member of Nicolás Maduro’s inner circle. “I think nobody trusts Delcy Rodriguez” she added. Without naming her, Rodriguez also attacked Machado. “Let all those who truly love Venezuela come, but let those who seek to perpetuate the damage and aggression against the Venezuelan people stay in Washington!” she declared, suggesting that her rival was subservient to the US president’s will. Marco Rubio was scheduled to appear before the Senate for a hearing on the administration’s intentions regarding Venezuela. He assured the Senate that no military operation was being considered. Unless Delcy Rodriguez chooses not to collaborate with the United States.
