A senior Hungarian minister sparked outrage after saying Roma people exist to clean filthy train toilets. Following backlash, János Lázár apologised after intervention from prime minister Viktor Orbán. Opposition leader Péter Magyar seized the scandal while unveiling Anita Orbán as a western-leaning foreign-policy lead. Budapest’s mayor faces charges for organising a banned Pride march under Hungary’s child-protection law. Diplomatic tensions rose with Slovakia and Ukraine as Hungary’s election campaign enters an increasingly volatile phase.

I lived in Budapest for several years and unfortunately bigotry against Roma people is common even among well-travelled and otherwise liberal Hungarians. Orbán has been making attempts to bring them into his voting bloc but, to be sure, the schools and services in their neighborhoods are hugely neglected and discrimination requires many to hide their background to be employable. There have been lynchings in recent history which is not common but very, very upsetting

District VIII and its main entry point Blaha Lujza tér are really commonly cited as crazy dangerous and attributed to Roma. As an American who has lived in big cities it seemed safe as kittens 🤷

There have been some very popular contributions to Hungarian culture from the Roma people that are well loved such as their pop music and steak roasts
