Pierre Poilievre won a fresh leadership review with 87% support, securing his position nine months after losing the 2025 election. The vote reaffirmed him as prime minister Mark Carney’s main domestic opponent despite recent doubts over his leadership. Poilievre lost his parliamentary seat and saw two lawmakers defect to the Liberals late last year. This is the first time in two decades the party has retained a leader after an election defeat. Polls show the Liberals have recently widened their lead over the Conservatives.

Are the Canadian conservatives cucked why would they keep a man who lost his own seat and had to turn tail and take another

I really don’t get the appeal of keeping a losing horse but, then again, I’m not of a Torie.

  4. And with all these dynamics, Canada’s democratic credentials compared to other Western countries stand out even more. I don’t want to say what exactly is it for fear of jinxing it (though the Conservative Party itself may be evolving towards that), but I may already have done that even with this comment.

  5. What’s going to be interesting is whether there will be more defections in parliament. Allegedly there’s a few more Red Tory MPs willing to join Carney’s camp, but were holding out to wait and see the results of the leadership review.

Pierre has apparently promised to change his style after the leadership review… but he said the same thing before returning his parliament after losing his seat (then proceeding to change almost nothing, leading to last year’s defections)

The caucus seems to have a very different opinion of PP compared to the party base, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

(The caucus also has no power to push out Pierre – not even by “incapitation” that forced out the BC Cons’ leader – only the party base can do so according to the party’s constitution)
