I’m a pattern cutter (we’re the people who actually calculate how a piece of clothing is planned and sewn together / we grade different sizes / we test and plan fabrics / zips / buttons etc to be used) – in any design studio you’ll find a room full of aspiring elite types, but the pattern cutter is always sat in the corner, the odd one out (I concede, I don’t fit into this archetype but it’s usually an old lady or man, chainsmoking and has been in the job 45 years or something), either way, the opposite of the type of people you associate with working in fashion.
However, we see and hear a lot of types of things these people in influential, media and arts related industries get up to, and in my 20’s I absolutely knew people who knew of other people engaged in all of this stuff.
I’ll put it this way – sure, Hostel is a fictional horror movie, but there are absolutely places in the Balkans where you can go and ‘take your stress and anger out’ on any one of a catalogue full of victims. There are also plenty of places where these people can go on human hunting trips. In fact, I think it even recently came out that people were doing it in Bosnia in the 90s.
So yeah, in conclusion, I’m only 32 but I’ve retired to a farm in the mountains of South America, 200km from the nearest town and it’s still not far enough away from people lol.
