Starmer has secured multiple investment deals from Chinese companies in his visit to Beijing. This will not only create jobs in Britain, but also give greater market access for Chinese companies to sell their products. Additionally, Starmer has also secured reduced tariffs on certain UK products going into China, such as whiskey.
Now for my subjective opinion, I’m focusing more on a comparison between Starmer and Macron here. Despite having a much warmer public reception in Beijing, Macron actually secured very little in terms of deals. This might explain his sudden change of tone with China when speaking about his visit in Beijing when he returned to France, including threatening tariffs. Despite Starmer’s visit being less publicized, in terms of impact, Starmer’s visit is substantially more economically impactful for ties between the two countries.
Edit: I accidentally listed Astra-Zeneca as a Chinese company…My mistake. What I meant to say is that Astra-Zeneca has secured a drug licensing deal with a Chinese biotech company.
