The Democratic Party of Korea unanimously decided to expel Jindo County Chief Kim Hee Soo at a closed Supreme Council meeting.
The reason for the disciplinary action was that Governor Kim caused a stir by making disparaging remarks about foreign women during a live broadcast of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Administrative Integration Town Hall Meeting on the 4th.
On the 4th, at the “On-site Town Hall Meeting on Gwangju-Jeonnam Administrative Integration” held at the Haenam Culture and Arts Center, Chief Kim argued, “When Gwangju and Jeonnam are integrated, if we cannot fully address population extinction through legislation, we should import young virgin women from Sri Lanka or Vietnam so that rural bachelors can get married.”

(1) Immigration: Korean politicians lack any understanding on how immigration works.
3. My opinion
There have been widespread practice of unmarried Korean farmers marrying South East Asian women through “international marriage agency” since 2000s because young women left rural communities for the freedom and opportunities in the cosmopolitan cities like Seoul. This “international marriage” practice has gained criticism that this is a borderline human trafficking. But this practice made South Joella one of the region with highest birth rate. It seems this crazy chief think this practice should spread.

Oh this shit caused quite some anger in Vietnamese media, at least through my limited proficiency lol. Overall, I certainly don’t oppose those “international marriage” even if most of the time they’re very unequal. But many of them have become abusive, like I read somewhere that 40% or more of foreign spouses suffered domestic violence in South Korea. So yeah that shit needs to be addressed, as well as the trafficking-style matchmaking that creates this dynamic in the first place.
