Bola Tinubu, head of state of Nigeria, on why Africa needs its own credit rating agency. The points he raises make sense, especially with regards to on-the-ground presence but I struggle to agree with the ultimate conclusion. Such an agency would need to gain the confidence of global investors which would be a difficult prospect. It might be more sensible for existing credit rating agencies to increase their presence in Africa and get more boots on the ground to more accurately upgrade or downgrade nations.
