An update on the European drone scare that happened in September. Airports across western Europe were shut down due to drone sightings, with many governments arguing that foregin powers were responsible.
Norway’s domestic security service PST investigated a large number of reported drone sightings across the country in 2025, including incidents near airports, military facilities and other critical infrastructure. According to the agency, none of these cases could be linked to foreign states or intelligence services. In many instances, the reported “drones” turned out not to be drones at all, but stars, aircraft or other aerial phenomena.
The interview also touches on the situation in Denmark, where heightened alert levels were previously announced amid concerns about potential hybrid threats. Haugland declined to comment on the Danish case, noting that PST’s mandate is strictly domestic. She did confirm, however, that Norway maintains close contact with Scandinavian and European partners on drone-related security issues.
The findings from Norway mirror a broader pattern seen elsewhere in Europe. Over the past months, Dronewatch has published several articles about the wave of so-called “drone panic” that gripped multiple countries, following reports of unidentified drones near military sites, airports and energy infrastructure. In almost all of those cases, hard evidence was lacking. Often it remained unclear whether a drone was actually present at all, let alone who might have been operating it.
PST’s conclusions for 2025 appear to reinforce those earlier observations: many alarming reports can be explained without pointing to coordinated drone activity or foreign interference.

Submission statement: This is an update on the drone panic that was discussed on the sub quite frequently. The Norwegian intelligence services have now come out and said that they could not find any evidence of drone activity and that many of the reports were simply misidentifications of regular planes and stars.
The Danish government hasn’t made any reports, but since they haven’t provided any evidence either, I think it’s pretty fair to say the whole thing was most likely mass hysteria.
Was this really a mass psychosis? It all sounded a lot like Putin’s methods, to be honest.
