Bloomberg reports that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has ruled out Germany developing its own nuclear weapons but supports closer nuclear cooperation with France and the United Kingdom. Speaking amid mounting pressure on Europe to assume greater defense responsibility as the United States scales back its security role under President Donald Trump, Merz suggested Germany could rely on French and British nuclear deterrence instead. European allies are sharply increasing military spending in response to Washington’s shift. Merz’s stance reflects Berlin’s effort to strengthen deterrence without breaching longstanding domestic and legal constraints against acquiring its own nuclear arsenal. Seperately, Merz said fighter jet project “Future Combat Air System” fails to meet Germany’s needs.

  2. Does anyone seriously believe that Germany would ever wish to develop their own nukes? With how much they cost to develop and the likely public pushback to such a proposal. Much more likely (but still quite unlikely) that a pan-European force would be given nukes from France (not happening under Macron and even less likely if the right get into the Élysée)

  3. The germans are one of the few countries that may never actually build nukes in the coming European militarization. My money is on Poland likely already working on it, and Sweden (with possible nordic cooperation) coming in right behind. We may also see a curveball country do it, maybe the Baltics?

  4. Relying on a larger, foreign power to the west hasnt proven to be a reliable strategy for Germany, but maybe THIS time it will.
