i know instagram isn’t a great source in general, but this account does maps based on available statistics, and i checked individually some regions, and their collapse is as large as described here
example: Murmansk oblast is efectively evaporating since 1989
to understand the evolution of Russia’s recruitment and mobilization of troops for Ukraine, it is useful to consider the fact that outside Moscow and Sankt Petersburg , Russia is largely getting empty at a fast pace
* the metropolitan regions of Moscow and Sankt Petersburg ( Moscow city+ Moscow oblast+St. Pt.+ Leningrad Oblast) have seen their population grow by almost 10 million people since 1989, and had a combined population of 29 milion or 20% of Russia’s population in 2021 census
* **since they are much” younger” on average than the rest of Russia, they account for up to 25% of Russia’s working age male population**
* **but they only account for 7% of Russia’s confirmed military deaths according to Mediazona**
* Russia had roughly 40 million men between 18 to 64 in 2021
* 30 million of them lived outside Moscow and Sankt Peterburg extended metropolitan regions
* assuming Moscow and Sankt Peterburg make up less than 10% of all casualties, that means that of 1.3 million cassaulties, 1.2 million occured outside those two megacities
* **so outside Moscow and Sankt Pb., 1.2 million/ 30million= 4% of all men of working age either died, disappeared or got wounded in the war in Ukraine. Adding another 1 million curently in the Russian army, means roughly 7% of the Russian male population outside M and SP was part of the Russian army at some point since 2022**

Needs to get worse.

That’s actually better than the average eastern european country. Total population barely dropped, they just moved to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. That being said, the combination of low immigration compared to Moscow, hollowed out population pyramids exacerbated by the war will probably mean complete depopulation in the coming decades for many parts of Russia.
