Bloomberg reports that Iceland is preparing a referendum on whether to restart EU accession talks. Foreign minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir said a bill will be submitted before summer, with a vote possible as early as August. Iceland applied to join the European Union in 2009, but negotiations were suspended in 2015 after a change of government. The current coalition has pledged a vote by next year, citing shifts in Europe’s security and economic landscape. Membership could broaden Iceland’s trade access, while a separate report will assess the pros and cons of retaining the krona amid inflation concerns.
