After some years of US-India relationships growing closer, the erratic nature of Donald Trump means India has shifted its foreign policy to grow stronger ties with the other middle powers such as the EU, Canada, Brazil, and so on, even softening relations with China last year. A rather broadly positive development imo (barring the circumstances that caused it). Only a few years ago, India and Canada were at each other’s throats after the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and here we are shaking hands. What a mutual headache can do for diplomatic relations.

I don’t know that any one thing can ever be attributed to India hedging its geopolitical bets. That’s just always kinda been India’s MO. (Which follows logically from its geography and history)

India’s relationship has always been sorta of grey with the United States. It is sort of in that weird limbo that Vietnam is in.
The US has sponsored and signed off on a lot of the heinous shit that Pakistan has pulled over sometime. It certainly simmered down since the Cold War, but it will take maybe a generation for things to clear up. On the same wave length, I don’t know if it would be wise for the US to completely pull the plug on Pakistan either. Pakistan is a nuclear state and the ISI is practically gluing the country together. If they dissolve, it would be like gambling with a Taliban type situation with a lot of a jihadist insurgents running amok with a nuclear weapon on their hands. I am not a fan of the Aristocratic Military Establishment in Pakistan at all, but they are preferable to the Islamist Parties.

One of the reason India totally wont be with America against russia is geography. History too but geography is one main thing.
India would simply have 3 nuclear nations above its head who would hate them and might attack them. That is a tough situation to be in. And two of them are manufacturing powerhouses.
I do hope india us relations improve better and India continue to reduce russian military dependency.
Modi govt knew how much russians are fed by the chinese now that’s y they are slowly pivoting towards the west. They are slowly pivoting to the west but maintaining cordial relationship with Russia.
