In an interview with Bloomberg, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called U.S. tariffs “a mistake” and urged the creation of a free-trade zone between the European Union and the United States Her comments follow a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that struck down part of President Donald Trump’s tariff authority, prompting him to impose a global 10% levy on top of existing duties. Meloni said the EU should revive last summer’s EU-U.S. trade accord and move “in a diametrically opposite direction” from protectionism. Italy, whose exports to the U.S. face elevated tariff rates, is seeking a sustainable agreement to defuse transatlantic trade tensions. Meanwhile, German spokesman Sebastian Hille noted that “like the European Commission, the German government wants to stick to the EU-US tariff deal.”
