Can mainstream journalists stop treating republicans as if they have any integrity or moral consistency PLEASE

Sure, but they’ll accept the change without any question as long as their dear leader says to. The American right as a whole is not a political movement with other considerations, it’s a cult.

The Right is not “becoming what it hates,” it is simply pursuing power by any means necessary, as it has done for decades.
The Right appears to be ideologically inconsistent and hypocritical as long as one only pays attention to their words, but if one pays attention to their actions, one finds that they have in fact been impressively focused and committed to obtaining ever-growing heights of power.
Power is the Right’s only principle. Power is their north star, and they have never deviated from it. \
They don’t hate hypocrisy; they love it because it gives them power.
