The Trump administration has delayed announcing a weapons sale to Taiwan over concerns about Chinese President Xi Jinping’s reaction, unnamed U.S. officials told the New York Times. Trump is due to travel to Beijing next month. The State Department said it does not discuss pending arms sales but that β€œthe enduring U.S. commitment to Taiwan continues.”

As I’ve argued before, the detente the Trump administration has created with China on trade has significantly limited the range of actions that the US can take in their Pacific diplomacy. People were focusing too much on the specific tariff numbers, the potential impact of rare earths restrictions, etc. and never considered the diplomatic impacts a deal could have.

It’s also why we see allies of the US do the same, because if the US is acting like this there’s no reason for everyone else to not extract some benefits from diplomacy with China.

I wonder how much of this is appeasing Beijing vs the simple fact that we kind of diverted these arms to iran
