After the first Gulf War, Shias were able to grip control of Northern and Southern Iraq. We bombed Iraq for a decade with the expectation that they would use it as fodder to topple the regime in Baghdad. It didn’t happen until we invaded.
I’m not really sure that Trump has a strategy here apart from bombing shit and expecting good things to happen. That strategy is not a reliable one, it crystallized the conditions for the Khmer Rouge to emerge in Cambodia….

Where are those 50,000 defectors Pahlavi promised.
Also does this mean Trump is seriously considering a lengthy occupation like Iraq as I doubt we could just leave if so easily if we did put boots on the ground.

If this does indeed end up happening then it would not surprise me if we find out later a mix of JSOC/CIA/ODA’s are already/imminently on the ground akin to something like 2001 Afghanistan
