There’s a lot going on in this story, but the only winners here are the previous owners that did a load of unpermitted work on this quadplex and offloaded it as a single family home.
It’s easy to get into a “who’s right and who’s wrong” argument here regarding taking apartments to ff the market, but the ultimate takeaway for me is that CA cities should streamline the permitting process instead of using it as a NIMBY obstacle and an impact fee cash cow, and you wouldn’t get nearly as much unpermitted work.
I live in SF. We have friends who’ve struggled to find decent places to live. Me and my partner want to own a condo but the prices are insane. I look at this article and I just feel outrage at the politics of the city.
We’re micromanaging one family and lot and 4 unit building, but what should have happened is — this lot should have been *so* valuable that the developer would have been insane not to build a *16* unit building with a grand penthouse on top. There could have been room for this person’s family on top, plus 16 other families living below them. That’s what should have happened. But it was illegal. You couldn’t do that.

Sounds like a typical case of Caveat Emptor. Absolutely sucks for the buyers, but getting a lemon isn’t exactly newsworthy. I guess checking zoning etc of properties you purchase isn’t a common thing? I’m not a homeowner so idk what’s standard as part of the process.
