Submission statement: This article is exceptionally good. It's rare to get a high quality South Africa article like this. The article deconstructs some of the mythology that White nationalist right wingers have created around Apartheid South Africa by showing how the police state that was required to maintain Apartheid caused genuine harm to White people living in it. As a result, the article strikes at the heart of one of the core narratives driving the turn to the far right in the U.S. and Europe: that in the same way life for White South Africans was "better under Apartheid", life for White Westerners can only be good through White domination of minorities and limited migration. This is what makes it relevant to this sub – it attacks ideas which are animating the illiberal wave currently sweeping many liberal countries in the West.

Leftists seem to switch between calling south Africa’s affirmative action retribution for apartheid and then ridiculing the idea.
