Oracle, Silver Lake, MGX, and other backers have already paid $2.5 billion and are set to make several more payments for the $10 billion in total, so all of this is being paid by American private investors, with no involvement from Bytedance or other Chinese entities.

The new TikTok US company is worth only around $14 billion dollars for reference.

Clearly, Oracle and others see immense value in collecting the data of American TikTok users, enough to pay the Trump administration what amounts to, in my opinion, an enormous bribe, even if they don’t get to control the algorithm themselves. As such, beyond the cronyism happening here, there are discussions to be had on the expanding surveillance of Americans by private entities and the ever increasing influence they have in American politics.

And let me guess, they feel that this is money that they can spend outside of the appropriations process
