  1. 1. Summary

The United States government has launched an investigation into 60 trading partners, including Korea, aiming to block the import of goods produced through forced labor.

On March 12 (local time), the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced in a statement posted on its website that it has initiated an investigation, based on Section 301 of the Trade Act, targeting 60 countries including Korea, in order to ban imports of products made with forced labor.

    (1) Trade War: Americans accuse Korea and other countries of using forced labor to practice “unfair trade practice”.

    3. My opinion

Americans seem to believe that the reason why their manufacturing sector got destroyed is because Korea is using forced labor. What an interesting conspiracy theory.

An unappreciated side effect of this is how this widespread application of “forced labour” and “overcapacity” delegitimizes any future case they might want to bring against other nations, especially China. By using the 301 in such a way, it really waters down the precedent for it, and also weakens the economies of allying nations that might otherwise be happy to address undervalued currencies.

  4. The US will destroy the entire world, rather than admit that Donald Trump was wrong about anything.
