Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever advocates for the normalization of relations with Russia and for renewed access to cheap energy. He says this in interviews with French-language media following the French-language publication of his new book. “European leaders agree with me in private, but no one dares to say it out loud,” argued De Wever in business newspaper L’Echo .
According to the Belgian Prime Minister, Europe is in a losing position as long as the war in Ukraine continues. Europe continues to finance Ukraine without sitting at the negotiating table itself, while China profits from cheap fossil fuels and the United States earns from arms sales. “We are losing on all levels,” said the Prime Minister.
Therefore, negotiating is the only remaining option, De Wever concludes. Because Europe cannot force Russia militarily or economically without American support, he believes that ultimately only one way remains: striking a deal.
At the same time, De Wever says he does not want to be naive. According to him, Europe must rearm its borders, but also normalize relations with Russia to regain access to cheap energy. “That is a matter of common sense.”
