New Yorker here. We need to end the right to shelter, enforce panhandling laws, and do regular sweeps of the homeless sleeping on public property. Unfortunately, Mamdani won 50.7% of the vote, so the opposite will happen.
Current laws incentivize homeless people to come to NYC from the whole region. They know they’ll get a ton of free stuff, including free places to stay, free food, etc… along with the ability to hassle people on the street for money. Laws that incentivize the homeless to go elsewhere instead of coming here aren’t that hard to figure out. Allowing people to stop being responsible for their own needs and transferring that expense to taxpayers is nuts.
