Belgium already hosts the headquarters of numerous European institutions, such as the European Commission, the European Council, and the European Parliament, but now wants to add parts of the United Nations to that list as well , reports the Flemish weekly magazine Knack.

Since the United States, under President Donald Trump, drastically cut funding for international organizations, the UN has increasingly had to tighten its belt. This leads, among other things, to the cancellation of programs, staff layoffs, and the merger of agencies.

An obvious area for savings is office space. The UN headquarters is still located in New York, while Geneva is also an important UN center – both particularly expensive cities. Earlier this year, some 300 UN staff members already moved from New York to Bonn, Germany. The workforce is also growing in Brussels, where the UN has about twenty offices.

But Bart De Wever’s government is thinking bigger, according to Knack. Brussels, along with Washington, is one of the most important diplomatic centers in the world and relatively affordable. So why not try to attract UN institutions such as the World Trade Organization and the International Labour Organization? Belgium has already courted both agencies, two well-informed diplomats tell Knack. So far, without success.

The fate of humanity really is to be ruled from Brussels. Thanks Trump. Doomed us all to the Earth Free State.
