Relevance:
– The DA is the largest liberal party in South Africa, and is in coalition with the ANC in government
– The previous leader of the DA ended his tenure in scandal and on bad terms with a key DA constituency, namely farmers
– Hill-Lewis has to restore trust in the party amongst coalition skeptics and aggrieved farmers, and has to maintain the coalition with the ANC while also strengthening the DA's position in general
– If he succeeds in doing this, and if the ANC continues to decline, the DA may well become the leading party in South Africa by 2029, which is his goal.
