Even United wouldn’t actually want an AA merger to happen. They do however want to buy JetBlue for their JFK slots and their hub in Ft. Lauderdale. They’ve made no secret about their desire to return to JFK (in a big way) and to establish a southeastern hub. Buying JetBlue would just so happen to immediately get them those things. Their strategy here is to clearly make a bunch of noise by proposing something nonsensical to then “settle” for a smaller acquisition
