People Power Party Leader Meets U.S. Officials at White House

1. Summary

Kim Dae-sik, head of the People Power Party leader’s special briefing team, met with reporters at the National Assembly on the morning of the same day and said, “Jang is scheduled to meet key government officials at the White House in the afternoon of the 15th.” When asked if Jang would meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Kim replied, “I cannot comment on that now. They requested confidentiality.” This explanation came as criticism emerged within and outside the party over the timing of Jang’s visit, less than two months before local elections.

Kim explained that Jang’s trip was moved up by two days, stating, “There was a request from U.S. political circles to meet privately with the party leader, so we adjusted the schedule.” Originally, Jang was to depart on the 14th for a 2-night, 4-day stay, but after publicizing the itinerary, additional meeting requests from various sectors prompted the earlier departure. Jang’s schedule includes a visit to the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the 14th and meetings with Republican and Democratic lawmakers on the 15th, along with confidential engagements with Trump administration officials.

Jang Dong-hyuk, pro-Yoon far-right leader of PPP well-known for his worship of MAGA, is focusing on meeting Trump administration officials instead of campaigning for upcoming local elections. Far-right leaders around the world are heading to the US to gain favors from Donald Trump instead of spending money on building domestic networks.

3. My opinion

Pro-Yoon Far-right has been greatly emboldened since Trump’s military adventures on Venezuela and Iran. They are now convinced “Second Foundation War”, a prophesized Trump’s invasion on Korea preached by evangelical pastors is coming. So, they are intensifying lobbying efforts in Washington D.C., greatly diminishing resources for domestic electoral campaigns. With the help of Jang, they are even wasting the resources of PPP, resulting in their electoral infrastructure fracturing. The public is growing more and more hostile as they view them traitors who will sell out the country to Trump, but the far-right is not deterred.

They are convinced that Trump’s intervention will overturn everything. For them, elections, public opinion and domestic networks don’t matter as long as Trump helps them.
