Representative Hortman was the only Democrat who voted against eliminating MinnesotaCare services for undocumented immigrants.
Her vote was widely regarded as a stunning upset, based on Minnesota's deeply rooted culture of both charity and corruption involving the transfer of wealth from taxpayers to their immigrant community.
Days later, a man came to her house and shot her and her husband.

When Boelter was arraigned on June 16, [prosecutors released a letter](https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25999675-vance-boelter-letter-to-fbi-director-kash-patel/) they say he wrote to FBI Director Kash Patel admitting to the murders.
“Dear Kash Patel. My name is Dr. Vance Luther Boelter Ed.D. I am the shooter at large in Minnesota involved in the shoo 2 shootings the morning of Saturday June 15th at approximately 2:30 am and 3:30 am, or around that time. I will probably be dead by the time you read this letter,” Boelter wrote.
The motive for the crimes remains unclear. People who know Boelter said he is an evangelical Christian, politically conservative and had been struggling to find work.
Authorities said Boelter made long lists of politicians in Minnesota and other states — all or mostly Democrats.
