North Korea has officially abandoned the goal of reunification through redefining its borders to marking South Korea as its southern neighbour, in one of a series of constitutional amendments that mark a move away from older, established practice, including a removal of anti-imperialist rhetoric, of extolling North Korea as a continuation of the legacy of Kim Jong-Il and Kim Il-Sung, and in mandating the approval of Kim Jong-Un himself and his successors for using nuclear weapons. This doesn’t mark an end to Pyongyang-Seoul hostilities, but this is a pretty significant drift nonetheless, and seems to mark the culmination of efforts away from seeking Korean reunification. I am not happy with Kim’s regime remaining, but I think it’s good for diolomatic overtures like this to become codified, and for the risk of a second Korean War to be mitigated.
