    1. Summary

The leader of Korea’s ruling Democratic Party, Jung Chung-rae, continues to face backlash for asking a young girl at a campaign rally in Busan on Sunday to call him “oppa” (older brother).

Now, a video of him during last year’s presidential race holding hands with young women and asking them to shout, “Go Chung-rae oppa!” is also circulating, further amplifying criticism that the lawmaker’s comment wasn’t a slip of the tongue but evidence of the entrenched sexist views in domestic politics.

    3. My opinion

DPK is quite socially conservative to western liberals. Social conservatism leaks out whether they discuss the topics of gender equality and minorities issue. It became more apparent after the fall of pro-Moon faction and the dominance of pro-Myung faction. President Lee Jae-Myung is said to be a typical Kyung-sang do man, a conservative patriarch, in his personal life. This led to his faction being more economic progressive compared to former President Moon Jae-in but less culturally liberal.

  3. Jesus, as an outside observer I swear that Korean politics feels like distilled Culture War bs were casual and weaponized sexism is the norm.
