Submission Statement:
The former President of Botswana, Festus Mogae, has died.
[Here](https://www.dw.com/en/pioneer-in-the-fight-against-aids-botswanas-ex-president-festus-mogae-died/a-77095797) is a news article about his passing.
However rather than post only that news article, I thought it might be more valuable to post this article from someone who was a friend of and admirer of both former President Mogae and former President Masire.
In the article, he describes both men's contributions to Botswana. Masire co-founded BDP with Seretse Khama and was the architect of their economic success. Mogae took over in the late 90s and led the country wisely through the HIV/AIDS crisis.
The value of this piece is that it gives a bit more history on the exemplary democratic leadership of Botswana beyond Sir Seretse Khama, with whom we are all familiar. It shows that Botswana's success was not due only to Khama himself, but rather that there were other leaders who contributed to that success and sustained it afterwards. This should make us broaden our understanding of why Botswana has been a stable democracy.

Mogae’s signature accomplishment was confronting the AIDS crisis. While other African leaders in the neighbourhood were denying or ignoring the HIV/AIDS pandemic, Mogae spoke out clearly and prioritised a humanitarian response. Even at great expense to the fiscus, he opted to offer ARVs for free at Botswana’s clinics.
He was an early partner with the PEPFAR programme, and was praised for his leadership by American officials:

In 2025, Botswana became the first high HIV burden nation to drive mother-to-child transmission of HIV to near zero:

Fun fact, when Bush famously boasted about visiting a park in BOTSWANA(!), he was referring to a visit earlier that year where he met President Mogae in the context of the fight against AIDS:
