On the desk of the hotel manager is Jung's Red Book (pic). The book details Jung's theories on the collective subconscious. This is the whole point of the film – the collective unconscious of the United States.
The hotel manager himself resembles the US President Jimmy Carter (pic).
The hotel alludes many times to the US' genocide of the Native Americans, with its decor and it being mentioned it was built on a native burial ground (pic).
The Apollo Moon landing is referenced front and centre (pic).
The scene with the bar tender in the Gold Room is a reference to the US fully abandoning the gold standard in 1971, which was a major macro-economic event that leads to inflation: "Your money's no good here", "Orders from the house", "It's not a matter that concerns you, at least, not at this point".
A scene with the twins features a poster with the word "Monarch", referencing government trauma based mind control experiments on children which splits their personalities, an offshoot of MKULtra (poster in top left).
The sexual blackmail of senior figures is also referenced, with man shown with someone in a teddy bear outfit, which was said to have happened in Bohemian Grove pic. Harry Shearer also referenced this in his film Teddy Bears' Picnic).
Just like in Jung's book, the film taps into the collective subconscious of an entire country. It's a horror film about the United States.
