Funding per domestic student has eroded since 2010 and the loss of EU students doing lower cost arts degrees to subsidise more expensive science and engineering degrees coupled with public research funding in the UK being poor and the recent push to cut foreign student numbers has put a financial noose around universities, especially those like Nottingham which have huge liabilities due to the new campus.

The government need to hike student fees to at least £14k per annum, it’s not like they can get anymore unpopular and it’s the right thing to do. They can offset it by addressing fiscal drag on the repayment threshold and going back to Plan 2 repayment terms. But they’ve spent the last 2 years ignoring this so I highly doubt they’ll do that.
