I don’t know why anyone thought for a second that they weren’t doing this? They had other game before that they were using for data, and other companies with similar games have been caught selling data.
At one point he call it an insane business pivot, but it wasn’t, the company was always focused on data collection, they just had to come up with different ways of encouraging people to do it.
The company even got it’s start as an internally funded Google division.
