  1. Finally it’s here, the monthly “[Insert hellhole state in the US] is richer than [Insert European country]” post where everyone catfights over GDP per capita, mass shootings, life expectancy and so on. I was getting worried

Britain is unintentionally becoming the strongest example of why degrowth is a terrible idea. People in the “1st world” are not going to sit by and accept a stagnation (let alone a decline) in their living standards.

Degrowth is a recipe for populist fervor, which explains the surge in Reform popularity. The solutions Reform is offering is just meat to the populist base, and isn’t likely to materially improve anything, but it’s enough to make people feel like the government is doing something. And there are always easy scapegoats to target if it fails.

Would you, an r/neoliberal user viewing this comment, rather live in Britain or Mississippi? Not a rhetorical question, I want people to answer this seriously. Would love to hear from both sides here.

I think the answers would reveal a lot about how people actually perceive wealth and productivity versus actual quality of life and human development.

  4. Submission Statement: This article diagnoses Britain’s economic stagnation as the result of a long series of bad choices layered over deeper structural problems. Deindustrialization left many regions struggling, austerity after the financial crisis made those problems worse by hollowing out public services and local government, Brexit added another major drag on investment and growth, and the country’s inability to build housing, infrastructure, and energy capacity has kept productivity low. Britain now feels increasingly stuck, with economic output per person just above the USA’s poorest state in Mississippi and its economic frustration feeding political instability and nostalgia rather than a clear path forward.

Honey it’s 4pm, time for your “Britain is a dysfunctional mess” humiliation ritual.
