Submission statement: The topic of social media bans for minors has been often discussed and it nothing new per se. I find the way they are implemented is problematic in several ways. First of all they are basically the way the whole internet will be gated and all activity will eventually be coupled to a government ID. The other thing is that even things like YouTube are banned for under 16 year olds. Which to me as somebody that grew up on the internet of the 2000s is insane.

However, I would shift you attention to something new and that is the idea of a nightly social media curfews for 16 and 17 year olds. I find that even more draconic. To me it basically evolves in the total control of young people. The idea that minors even have a right to liberty seems to disappear.

If your goal is to help young people to grow to become self-sufficient and resilitient adults taking away their freedom is not the way either.
