
Lincoln released the original Emancipation Proclamation (the one here) in September of 1862, to take affect January 1st of 1863. As the civil war continued, secessionist states continued to be liberated. The final state, Texas, had their enslaved people emancipated by the US Army on June 19th, 1865.
That is why we celebrate Juneteenth, as Emancipation Day!
