>enacted stricter policies to tamp down on crime rates that have become a political liability in some vote-rich parts of the country
The stricter policies are mainly not to tamp down on crime rates, there is little if any evidence they will do that
the policies are mainly to shore up political liability

The government over the last year has tweaked with the Criminal Code some 80 times according to the CBC. They have introduced sweeping changes including legislation to curb hate crimes, sexual predation, retail theft and violence against transit operators. Now the most contentious is their lawful access bill, which has even attracted criticism from the Conservatives for being an unjustifiable overreach by the government. All of this to say is that the Liberals have shifted away from Trudeau-era policies regarding crime, and have started trying to position itself as being tough on crime.

I was in a Shopper’s Drug Mart in downtown Ottawa the other day and during the 40 seconds or so I was in line three people walked out with shit. I don’t really know what the answer is – it’s not like a cop in every store or block would be either particularly feasible or even desirable – but I’ve lived around here my entire life and it really wasn’t always like this.
