I’m under the impression the Internet went public back in 1993 only to collect data on individuals for making software more human like. 9/11 and the patriot act, plus DARPA lifelog were designed to give the government the data and the means to collect data for this computing project. Section 215 of the patriot act comes to mind. Doing some investigating I found this article from 2003:

LifeLog would have addressed one of the key issues in developing computers that can think: how to take the unstructured mess of life, and recall it as discreet episodes. A trip to Washington, a sushi dinner, construction of a house.
"Obviously we're quite disappointed," said Howard Shrobe, who led a team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Artificial Intelligence Laboratory which spent weeks preparing a bid for a LifeLog contract. "We were very interested in the research focus of the program … how to help a person capture and organize his or her experience. This is a theme with great importance to both AI and cognitive science."
To Tien, the project's cancellation means "it's just not tenable for Darpa to say anymore, 'We're just doing the technology, we have no responsibility for how it's used.'"
Private-sector research in this area is proceeding. At Microsoft, for example, minicomputer pioneer Gordon Bell's program, continues to develop ways to sort and store memories. Shrobe's colleague at MIT, thinks such efforts will still go on at Darpa, too.
"I am sure that such research will continue to be funded under some other title," wrote Karger in an e-mail. "I can't imagine Darpa 'dropping out' of such a key research area."

DARPA Lifelog was ultimately shut down after harsh public opinion. But down to the exact same day Facebook was launched by Mark Zuckerberg.

So my question is, if the internet and social media was the final means of collecting human data for Ai, how deep was this in the pockets or blackmail of JE? and if my impression is correct… the implications are that they’ve had this plan to replace humans with artificial intelligence since before 1993? Everything else has been a dog and pony show?

  1. This can’t be right. Or at least it’s incomplete. I’m pretty sure Al Gore invented the internet, but there’s no mention of him here.
