Submission Statement: having less affordable outlets for hobbies is enshitifying society

  2. Disagree strongly. Supply and demand haven’t ceased to operate, the issue is that demand for fun outside the home has sharply decreased because not only do we have more movies, movie quality shows, and video games than can be consumed in one lifetime, but we all have apps designed to give us cheap dopamine instantly and constantly.

The value proposition has changed and more movie theaters or bowling alleys won’t make it any easier for them to compete with “half watching Netflix while scrolling.”

    >Over the course of the past two decades, the US has lost 2,000 golf courses

Gotta pump those numbers up. Those are rookie numbers.

Seriously though the fact that entertainment used to be a relatively inefficient activity from a market perspective has come back to bite us substantially as the market has become rational.

It turns out there’s a pretty inelastic demand for fun, so places continue to be able to squeeze significantly more out of fun than the “good ol’ days.” Plus an affordability epidemic hitting housing further crushing what people are happy to spend on leisure.

  4. Everything is getting more expensive combined with car culture turning people off from doing little things outside the house. Urbanism would address a lot of the problem.

When I was in Japan I was amazed at the density and amount of just random places for entertainment and hanging out. Free or inexpensive places like museums, arcades, karaoke, manga cafes, PC cafes, etc. All within walking distance and short public transit rides.

After I moved out of the city, the fun I’m having is quite expensive. Sailing…Skiing in the winter… wakeboarding…

These things used to be middle class activities. Normal people used to go skiing as a family and sailing too.

So many people are just locked out of fun things. Skiing has gotten very expensive for instance. These actives are almost solely marketed and priced to the upper class now.
