Submission claim: This article is an opinion piece which after the latest and most damning scandal for the Platner campaign takes a look at the people who boosted his rise that ignored clear red flags on the belief that such issues may in fact make him a more appealing candidate in the name of “anti-establishment” bonafides.

The implication that post-2024 shows that because Trump got away with a litany of personal scandals and being a dirty mudslinger made certain people within Democratic circles want a left wing version. You could sum up Platner as the manifestation of the Dirtbag Left. His supporters, campaign leads (Morris Katz), political allies in elected office took aim at critics of Platner as being inauthentic scolds.

In my view these people actually have a low view of working class people if they think masquerading as one and brushing off multiple scandals as working class things the establishment doesn’t get is actually relatable.

Platner last week was polling on a net difference over 10 points worse than Joe Biden in 2020 with non college voters the last time Susan Collins was on the ballot.

  2. Once again, Democrats will refuse to learn the lesson that people want younger, more energetic candidates. Instead they will claim they were right and continue to run geriatric, establishment democrats and being shocked when horrible, unvetted political nobodies end up taking the primary and tanking the election.

Democrats backed the candidate who legitimately nuked the primary and throughout that time was polling the best in the general in an extremely important race

Some, like the pod save guys and matt stoller, really did try to make it about the sexist “anti-hr” stuff, but that’s not what average maine dem voters were thinking when they supported him over the dem governor

I think, even considering the scandals that have come out, it is good to be able to identify and push to run people who are able to take races by storm as much as platner did

Of course you want to check backgrounds better, but I’m not convinced even more background checking would have caught this story that knocked him out, but that’s a much easier pill to swallow than I think chait is framing this as

  4. Who could have foreseen that the Nazi tattoo guy was a bad dude…

Also, I just don’t get this folksy thing. Platner comes from a very privileged background and he was doing horribly among people without college education.

I hang out in a variety of political spaces online and I’ve seen a lot of skepticism and even disbelief that progressives are pushing him from progressives and leftists online. Mostly because of the tattoo thing and a couple other scandals.

Whoever rallied behind him is a moron and I hope their influence is diminished in the progressive machine. This also diminishes my faith in the modern progressive Dem political space quite a bit. They need to get their shit together.

  6. Shapiro and Roy Cooper are about to win by huge margins in swing states, largely because they win over moderate working class voters.

This is probably the most bizzare part of the Platner campaign, there’s literally no evidence that him or his style of campaign actually wins over the people this whole thing was predicated upon. It was a bizzare psuedo-sexual frenzy to get this guy nominated for no reason. I have yet to hear a single item of his campaign platform that isn’t just what every other to the left of Cory Booker Democrat says, this whole thing was pointless.
