He was born William Kaufman in Oregon and lived there until his disappearance in the 1970s, after which his family presumed he was dead until he died in a Hollywood Hills fire at age 87 (2 doors up from my house).
He legally changed his name to "William de Rothschild" in 1985, and bought a bunch of Laurel Canyon real estate with cash and laid low there until his death in 2024.
He was age 33 at the time of the hijacking / parachute escape, and the only photo of "William de Rothschild" that exists looks a lot like the sketches of Cooper.
