    >The European Union has accused China – along with Russia – of trying to “reshape the global order in line with their interests” and “fostering a return to a sphere-of-influence logic”, in an explosive new position paper that contains some of the bloc’s strongest ever official criticism of Beijing.

    >The paper, which was adopted by the EU’s 27 foreign ministers on Monday without any announcement, accuses Beijing of being both a “key enabler” and “crucial enabler” of Russia’s war on Ukraine, language previously used by Nato.

    >In stark terms, the paper casts Russia and China as the two principal revisionist powers challenging European security and the international rules-based order.

    >The document also called out “China’s increasingly assertive behaviour in the South and East China Seas and across the Taiwan Strait can have a growing impact on European and Indo-Pacific security, stability and prosperity”.

This is a radical departure from typical diplomacy between EU and China, and comes off the back of trade tensions as well. I don’t think the paper itself will do much (especially with regards to Chinese actions in Asia-Pacific, the EU simply doesn’t have the expeditionary capability to do anything about that) but it does signal where EU is at currently with China. This will likely complicate any negotiations regarding trade before the imposed deadline in October by EU with regards to action by China to reduce its trade surplus with EU.

If you’re familiar with Finbarr Bermingham, the author of this article, and his pro-EU stance, you can tell he’s also immensely frustrated at the EU’s passivity here with regards to US provocations; despite threats to seize Greenland, which is arguably more revisionist than anything China has done to the EU, US is mentioned only twice in this paper.

Surprised the eu isnt trying to reshape the order themselves considering how shit the American order has been treating them recently.
