    >When promising undergraduate students look at the uncertainty surrounding doctoral funding, research continuity and career prospects, many will make a rational choice – taking industry jobs straight out of college or pursuing doctoral training abroad

Top US universities admitted 15% fewer students to doctoral programs for the upcoming 2026 academic year compared to last year. This is attributed directly to Trump’s cuts to research grants through agencies like the NSF universities rely upon for doctoral programs in STEM. Hostility of this administration to immigration has also resulted in a 21% decline in foreign applications to US doctoral programs.

Fewer STEM PhDs means fewer professors to teach the next generation of scientists and engineers, and industry won’t even be able to import them due to new prohibitive costs of H1B visas. Even if this trend is reversed under the next administration lasting harm has already been done to America’s industrial future.

This is of interest to neoliberal as it directly relates to immigration and industrial policy.
