Open-source AI is starting to be deprioritized and export controls on frontier technology are now becoming the norm. This is relevant to this sub because it shows how natsec and hard power priorities will always outweigh economic and soft power priorities.

Interesting how this conflicts with remarks made by Xi just days ago embracing open weight AI.

This article seems more related to restrictions on acquisitions similar to Manus where Chinese companies are taken over by western firms. I’d suspect similar reactions would happen in Washington if say Baidu attempted to acquire any American based LLM company

I’m going to say I’m confident this part won’t happen, Xi has pretty clearly outlined their strategy

(If anyone is confident in the reverse and wants to actually put it on the table, comment here so we can come back in say 1 years time)

  4. The U.S. and China seem more concerned in being co-belligerents in creating a norm of insulating AI models and chips from the broader world. This only inflames tension amongst them and the world more broadly—creating a open marketplace of competition to pursue even-stronger models and chips in a environment sans rules.
