In my childhood in Brazil people used to collect them to exchange for a wheelchair. No one ever saw any wheelchair, but we went along with the narrative

I bartend and we save them because one girl drops them off at ronald mcdonald house charities and they recycle to raise money for families in need

I used to collect all my tabs for my grandpa because he would take them all down to the VFW who would then take them to a recycling place or something and get some money for the VFW. Its like a small way to help donate.

In Iowa there is a 5 cent deposit on cans and bottles. Charged at the store and given to the drink distributors. A law was changed that the distributors supported in 2022 that let virtually everyone that sells beer and soda to opt out from taking cans back and now you have to go to a redemption center. They are few and far between have limited hours and sometimes they’re not even open the hours posted. In the year 2000 the recycling rate in Iowa was 93%. .. now it is less than half of that……………………….and the distributors get to keep the nickel we pay on each can and bottle we purchase….. Pocketing between 40 and 50 million a year on unredeemed cans. I can walk 5 minutes in any direction from my house and pick up 3 to 5 cans along the way.
