Submission statement: in the US, AI has become a divisive cultural issue. Arguments regarding AI regulations hinge not only on material concerns (e.g. alignment and safety, land use for data centers, the impact on the job market) but also cultural values. Personally, I think there is a very real chance that generative AI develops into a new front of the ongoing culture war, so the values at play are worth discussion and examination.

Somehow I feel like a lot of the AI discourse is overblown online. Most people I know irl use LLMs for a pretty wide range of things and very few relative to the online discourse are extremely anti AI.
I would actually be less offended by him using generative AI for visuals than I am about him using a chatbot for research. Because in my own experience using chatbots in research, everything it says has to be 100% vetted by hand because you can’t take anything for granted. So if it’s “saving you time,” it’s almost certainly costing you accuracy in the finished product.
