SS: It started during a parliament debate, Foreign Minister Winston Peters was lambasting the previous government’s covid restrictions. Green MP Lawrence Xu-Nan interjected, asking the Foreign Minister if he, himself, was vaccinated. The Foreign Minster responded
“Go back to your own country. You only came here just five minutes ago. Go back to your own country, that’s where they lie like a flat fish. But they don’t lie like that here, alright, this is what we call democracy.”
“This is called democracy, unlike what you’re used to. So go back to where you come from, you loud mouth, and maybe you’ll learn something about the politics of New Zealand in time before you go screaming out of here in three months time,” Peters said.
It is against this backdrop that a majority of Kiwi voters want Luxon to remove Winston Peters. It has not just been those on the left who have called for Peters’ removal, figures like Don Brash, former leader of the National Party and of the ACT party [also called for peters to resign](https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/361014064/absolutely-inexcusable-don-brash-calls-peters-be-sacked-over-china-comments). Just 29% of those polled believed that Luxon should keep Peters as Foreign Minister.

Luxon has so far refused to sack Peters’ with the risk being that it could see the collapse of the governing coalition. He said that he thinks that Peters’ should apoligise and that the [remarks were racist](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/politics/869604/luxon-plans-chat-with-peters-about-racist-remarks-at-some-point-says-they-ve-both-been-on-the-road), but no further.
